I art directed and designed Business Alabama magazine and two related annual publications for PMT Publishing for three years. Business Alabama is a monthly publication that covers businesses, large and small, in all sectors of the Alabama economy.
I loved the pace of working for a monthly magazine. I loved experimenting with design every month. I had templates I used for some articles, but I payed special attention to the design of the pages in the middle of our saddle-stitched magazine where the staples come through. Every month it is there “in the well” as they say where I felt the freedom to explore design in a new layout or freshen up an old layout.
While I art directed Business Alabama, I also art directed two related annual publications — Top Rank and the Economic Development Guide for the state of Alabama.
The most impressive and arduous annual publication I worked on was Top Rank. Every month, Business Alabama magazine runs one ranked listing of Alabama businesses by industry. In Top Rank magazine, all of these lists are compiled and sold as a separate publication. Lots of concatenating went into the making of this fine publication. There are a few of my favorite designs from that below.
The other annual publication I art directed was the Economic Development Guide for the state of Alabama. This publication was more editorial and pretty straightforward. There are a few of my favorite designs from that at the bottom of this page.
